Parenting kids is like teaching bicycle. First you try with the training wheels. Then you hold the bicycle and let it go few times to make the kid be able to ride by himself/herself. If you do not let go the bicycle, they will never learn how to ride.
Parenting is similar. As parents we want to protect our kids. We want to make best decision for them to protect them. However, if we do not let go and let them make their own decisions and learn from them then they will never be independent.
Try to teach as much as possible before the kids turn teenager. Any life habits, eating habits, culture, religion, anything you want to teach, teach them before they turn teen.
When the kids become teen, you need to start to let it go. I know it is difficult. You want to protect your kids. If you do not let it go, they will never be dependent.
From 13 to 18, your job is to trust that you have taught them well before the age of 13 and guide them.
Once the kids are 18, they are adults. Legally independent. All you say are just suggestions. They do not need to listen to you.
